LVDS is a low-swing differential signal technology that enables signals to be transmitted at rates of several hundred Mbps on differential PCB pairs or balanced cables, with low-voltage amplitude and low-current drive outputs for low noise and low power consumption.
For decades, the use of 5V power supplies simplified the interface between different technologies and manufacturers' logic circuits. However, with the development of integrated circuits and the demand for higher data rates, low-voltage power supplies have become an urgent need. Lower supply voltages not only reduce the power consumption of high-density integrated circuits, but also reduce the heat dissipation inside the chip and help improve integration. One example of reducing supply voltage and logic voltage swing is low-voltage differential signaling (LVDS). the LVDS physical interface uses a 1.2V bias to provide a 400mV swing (the reason for using differential signals is that noise appears as common mode coupling on a pair of differential lines and is subtracted in the receiver so that noise can be eliminated). the LVDS driver and receiver are not dependent on a specific supply voltage, so it is easy to migrate to a low-voltage supply. Therefore it is easy to migrate to a low-voltage powered system with no change in performance.
